Don’t stop believin’ in the power of TV

Don Day June 13th, 2007

Journey's Greatest HitsMembers of rock band Journey should send Sopranos creator David Chase a nice big basket of fruit. Chase used the band’s 80s hit “Don’t Stop Believin’” in the much talked about final scene of the mob drama Sunday. That scene created quite a little buzz Monday - and it was nearly impossible to miss the song. The show and all that coverage is having another benefit: The song is racing up the iTunes Top 100 chart. It was #27 when I checked last night, and as of this writing stands at #21. MTV notes the song has seen this type of bump before. When the song was included as part of a Family Guy episode, it hit #4 on the iTunes chart.

The Daily Show used it in a gag last night as well.

this is true, and journey has a place in a arena rock history, even with their sad sans steve perry performances. but the best journey moment on film is still rodney dangerfield’s musical golf bag playing “anyway you want me” in caddyshack, “so what? so let’s dance!”

    Journey was indeed excited:

They also found out about the ended ahead of time to give permission to use the track:

TV is powerful, but remember, the same scene on a CW show wouldn’t have gotten the same attention. The headline should read “Don’t stop believin’ in the power of good, quality content on TV.”

I liked how Chase framed that final scene with the words of the song, right up until the final “…don’t stop–” ending. Of course, I’m biased, having worn out my Escape cassette in 7th grade back in 1981 and buying everything they’ve released since. And may I also add, they still put on a heckuva concert all these years later :)
