Meredith debuts LivePDX.com in Portland

Posted by Cory Bergman on June 14, 2007

LivePDX.com is a brand new Meredith Corporation site that launched quietly in beta in Portland, OR. The site is an entertainment and events directory that encourages business to add their own listings for free. LivePDX.com also features a number of video clips (powered by Brightcove) ranging from restaurant tours to an interview with a local band. Similar to recent launches like DigPhilly.com, the site’s affiliation with Meredith or its local station, KPTV, is absent from the site.

You may remember, Meredith recently launched Better.TV, a national lifestyles video site.

before someone jumps in and trashes the concept of “free” listings for local businesses maybe we can be reminded of the recent google article that pointed to the idea as one of a short term pricing strategy rather than a long term business model.

This type of information was once a staple of daily metro papers, before it was taken away by specialty local publications. Now that papers have an opportunity to get back into this business via the web, they are letting publishers like Meredith and local TV stations take it. Is journalism culture just too different from entrepreneurial culture for newspapers to survive? Actually, if you look at the terms of service page on LivePDX, Meredith Corporation is mentioned.

Forget LivePDX…it is one of the worst sites I’ve ever been on. Check out Goboz…they go into open beta on Sept. 6th 2007.

It’s true that daily papers once did this kind of work, but is it really a problem that a TV station does it? At least it’s promoting local business. I like the site — there’s a lot of information and the videos of business owners can make sure that you’re visiting a real local business, not some national chain.
