CNN jumps ahead of MSNBC in web rankings

Cory Bergman June 15th, 2007

Nielsen-Netratings released its May stats today, and there’s a big development: CNN has surged ahead of MSNBC for the first time since November 2006. There’s a working theory on what may have happened, but first here’s the list of the top ten sites in the current events and global news category:

1. Yahoo News   30,451 (in 000s of unique users)
2. CNN Digital Network   29,094
3. MSNBC   28,347
4. AOL News   17,444
5. Tribune Newspapers   13,300
6. NYTimes.com   12,775
7. Gannett Newspapers   12,645
8. ABCNews Digital Network   10,211
9. McClatchy Newspaper Network   9,885
10. USAToday.com   9,528

Missing from the top 10 list for the first time in months is Internet Broadcasting (see the rankings from previous months here), which leads some people to suspect that the CNN Digital Network may have rolled in some of IB’s unique users as a result of its recent partnership, which involved CNN taking a small equity position in IB. We’ll do a little research on this and get back to you.

Add USA Today.com + Gannett Newspapers.com + Gannett TV.com = #4 this month. All the rest add the sum of its parts, so this is a fair metric/comparison. And, yes, I am among those partial to Gannett and its growing online/digital story…

These figures are the number of unique users who visit the site each month. Is that correct?

How meaningful are they without average number of visits per user & average time per visit?

Yep, the IB numbers (minus the NBCOO sites) are rolled into the CNN digital numbers beginning with the latest round of numbers. There’s supposed to also be some subset breakout of the overall IB numbers, but having not seen the monthly report, I’m not sure that happened.

This helps to explain CNN’s attraction to the deal, since it dramatically boosts their overall numbers, and options for national advertisers.
