I'm "Gen Y" (bleh... I hate the label too)

Since living on my own, I've never had a land line, always had a laptop, and am now considering giving up cable. Please tell me, why do I need 1000 channels again?

I can get everything I want on the net for free or cheaper than $90 a month. It saves a ton of money too.

Wow. Hadn't seen that, but it totally jives with my personal experience.

What interests me is how we're drawing the lines, though. Does "TV" mean a monitor for displaying broadcast and cable? Is an iPhone a phone or just a really small computer that you can watch "The Office" on?

I think what's critical here is not so much what electronics people are buying, but the shift from inactive to interactive.

I hate the "Gen Y" moniker, but damn straight, I can live without a TV, but g-d help you if you take my computer away.

(I can do without the cell phone though)

As a side note, this NY Times chart, I recall, is actually a subset of a much larger chart covering more devices. Forrester has been updating this research every six months to a year, most recently in September 2006 according to the Forrester Research web site.

.. it's also interesting that "Gen Y" ranks the importance of a computer so much higher than "Gen X." Gen Y is almost entirely a laptop generation. Plus, computers have been integrated into most of their classrooms since they first hit school. They are also most likely to ALWAYS live in a home w/a PC from cradle to grave.
