Seattle Times telemarketer gets punked

Posted by Cory Bergman on June 18, 2007

Blogger and technologist Chris Pirillo hosts a live internet talk show here in Seattle. So imagine Chris’ delight when a Seattle Times telemarketer unknowingly called the show trying to sell a subscription to the dead tree version of the newspaper (which happens to come bundled with an “e-edition”). As the kids say these days, hilarity ensued…

That was painful to watch/hear and not once did the idiot point-out that 4 x .99 is less than $5, just as 52 x .99 is less than $60.

“This is better than Google. It’s the complete newspaper.”

Thanks for the laughs AND for letting me know Chris is still esconced in Seattle and is actually live at this very moment, at the same chair, the same PC, livevideo-chatting, and I got to tell him LR picked up YT’s pickup of his funny skewering of the Times telemarketer lady;-)

Cool. I also posted it on CitizenRain.com for Seattleites to read.

Wow. The complete newspaper anytime you want, without abbreviations and BETTER THAN GOOGLE.

The Seattle Times is good … but it’s not that good.

I guess The Seattle Times has outsourced its telemarketers to Puyallup, huh?

    pu-what-up??

(sorry I used to live there)

Funny stuff, but you know Washington is a two-party consent state, right? That means recording someone’s voice without them knowing is against the law….

Why does he keep saying “American Online”? Is that just part of his act to lead on the telemarketer, or what?

Bo, I thought about that, too. But she’s the one that placed the call, and there’s no way he could’ve screened it beforehand, because she dialed a live call-in number — just like calling a radio station. I think he would win hands-down in court, especially if he asked for a jury trial.

And was he technically recording it at the time of the call? I get the impression (from reading the comments scrolling in the video), that a fan recorded this. The comments are actually quite funny (kudos to the person who pointed out that 99 cents a week doesn’t add up to four dollars a month…)

    No, no… you missed it…

This one isn\’t Seattle-related, but it\’s even funnier (and a lot more NSFW):
