Fired CA newspaper journalists still battling for jobs
Don Day June 19th, 2007
In April, Cory told you about the fired Santa Barbara News-Press journalists who started up their own news site to compete while they fight to get their jobs back. The National Labor Relations Board this week rejected the group’s plea to seek a court order to reinstate the eight fired reporters. The case will go to trial next month.
But here’s the thing: that renegade news site is impressive. Clean, open design. Tons of news. Well produced video. Plus, the venture is expanding - staffers are producing a 30-minute newscast every other week that airs on public access TV.

I love the newscast - so very retro. All they need is to put all the stories on film and get Esso to sponsor it.
Look, I’m all for newspapers and old newspaper people doing video on their websites. But I’m not impressed any more just because they made the effort to do it. It doesn’t have to look like a Fox station, but it doesn’t have to look like WCAU’s the 11th Hour newscast from 1948 either.
Having said that, I do empathize with the Santa Barbara folks in their battles over there, and I do like their clean, simple website. Now if they can find a way to monetize it, I could see them in it for the long haul.
