Nielsen considers adding web and TV ratings
Steve Safran June 19th, 2007
This would be a massive shift: Nielsen is considering integrating its online audience measurement with its household ratings system, according to Daily Research Online:
The plan would involve fusing data from its National and Local People Meter samples with Nielsen//NetRatings’ Internet panels to report the relationship between television and Internet consumption. If agreed, this would require the installation of new meters and software into the existing TV ratings panel to enable Nielsen to simultaneously track online usage in those households.
On the one hand, this will cut down on some of the resistance stations have when it comes to putting original content on the web. On the other hand, it does artificially connect two distinctly different products. What do you think?

HH’s is not a relevant measurement to online.
I only watch TV at home.
I use my computer to go online at work, at a coffee shop, and at home.

I think this is reflection of Nielson recognizing that television as we know it now is going to meld/morph with the net. Both mediums will become one in the same.
We are seeing video usage online explode
Conversely we are seeing Television add more and more Web type features (DVR, On-demand and search).
When the two are morphed together each will be stronger. Nielson doesn’t want to be left out of this evolution.
