Paris mania leads many news sites
Steve Safran June 26th, 2007
It looks like sweeps time on many major news sites, with Paris Hilton’s jail release leading the news. Not only is the story is given the lead treatment by the usual suspects, but it’s also the top story at the New York Times and the Washington Post. It also made Pravda. A bunch of frame grabs after the jump, but leave it to the Fox News website to come up with a headline that somehow manages to compare Paris’s release to Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “Dream”:

“Hilton released, uneventfully.”
Remember when news stories were actually about something newsworthy?

I absolutely loathe this story, and in fact, made a public pledge several weeks on my TV site to never ever mention her again.
I understand why news organizations feel that they need to cover the story. But my feeling is that if you do give it more than a brief mention, you’ve lost the ability to then complain about how it’s not a “legtimate” news story.
I just watched a segment on CNN in which they had a package about her release, hyped the Larry King interview, and THEN then anchor made some comment about not understanding why its an important story. Sorry, that’s a bit late in the game to bring that up.

It is all the rage for TV people to read this story with an air of disdain or to comment on its validity after reading the story. Rings hollow.
Don’t do the story, if your principles won’t allow it; and if you do it anyway because you were “told to,” then your principles don’t mean much anyway.

Do it because you’re told to, or because it’s what the audience is interested in.

Thank God she’s out … now we can drop the ‘Lohan extending rehab stay’ VO / reader in our 5 p.m. entertainment block for something more relevant to everyday citizens like you and me such as the story of a pampered princess who threw a hissy fit when she realized she couldn’t buy her way out of the legal system.
I wanna send a bottle of scotch to the judge who sent her back to the hoosegow. He’s the real star here.

Seriously? Pravda?

Much like Socrates and Martha Stewart, jail time will do a world of good for Paris’s street cred. Larry King’s just the beginning.

The best headline I’ve seen?
“The liberation of Paris.”

Better headline…NY Post: “V-D Day”.

Indeed. That won.
