New CNN.com design launches

Michael Gay June 30th, 2007

CNN.com is covering the breaking news in Scotland using the new look that had been in beta until recently. We first believed the new look would launch Sunday, but it would appear that the breaking news prompted them to launch the homepage early. There is a great show-and-tell video touring the site for users, something that I complimented in an earlier post about Google.

CNN.com

Congratulations to the team at CNN.com for the successful launch. (Thanks to “Anonymous” for the heads-up in our comments!)

I like the clean web 2.0 look. You don’t have the “breaking news” banner in the screen grab but thats a nice touch as well.

The new CNN website looks absolutely great! My favorite part about it is the Video Section. It’s now in flash and it takes no longer than 4 seconds to come on and I haven’t seen to many of those usual advertisements before the video.

and just like that, the “other section-front pages” are launching.

that ‘anonymous’ guy is pretty damn smart. and handsome.

Seems they have gone with a 16:9 ratio video player… too bad the first clip I played wasn’t 16:9, so it looked nice and stretched.. Over all, I think I will be “borrowing” some ideas..

Definitely the best of all major TV news sites. The New York Times site is still better.

Unfortunately, there’s no more live video, even for breaking news. No CNN International feed as with on Pipeline, nothing. You can watch BBC News 24 live online, though.

Click above for that feed, BTW.

    no more live video?

better check again… in a few days.

I think CNN has the best website for news. MSNBC is just cluttered and confusing. CBSNews.com would be great if they updated it often and provided more in depth coverage.

  • 12. ABC News Now Feed  |  June 30th, 2007 at 2:36 pm

ABC News Now is also playing BBC News 24 on its feed.

all this is only going to put more pressure on local to deliver a QUALITY product 24/7.

that’s where the $ is looking now.

problem always has been that your audience for local is global.

    solve that and win.

    btw- nice US section cnn.

There’re some problems with the relaunch. The link for “desktop alert” on the homepage is dead. On the cnn.com/world page, a box called CNN TV showed the text Your World Today with a photo of Larry King, and Lou Dobbs Tonight with Sanjay Gupta.

Prior to the relaunch, they were using Yahoo! for search and now suddenly, it’s Google.

The videos are not loading for me in the new launch of CNN. I have Flash Player but I get nothing, not even an error message. Can anyone shed some light on this?

Just found out they use Yahoo for search on CNN.com International, but Google for CNN.com US.

I love the new news frames set off with the grey borders and the clean look of the Latest News list, but the top section (above the distinctive red stripe) seems a bit cluttered. Maybe if they greyed out that whole top section it would recede a bit visually.
