Come again! 7-Elevens become “Kwik-E-Mart”
Don Day July 1st, 2007
7-Eleven and 20th Century Fox teamed up to promote the upcoming “The Simpsons Movie” by converting a smattering of 7-Eleven locations nationwide in to the Kwik-E-Marts featured on the TV show. All 6,000 American locations will feature Buzz Cola, KrustyOs and and Squishees (no Duff Beer…). The reverse product placement deal brought together 7-Eleven, Fox, Malt-O-Meal and Gracie Films, as well as independent franchisees. There was some concern about bringing the stereotypical Apu Nahasapeemapetilon character into reality, according to execs - but one of the franchisees involved is of Indian decent. Kumar Assandas owns the Las Vegas 7-Eleven Kwik-E-Mart: “I know it’s a stereotype, but it doesn’t bother me. Everybody knows it’s a joke,” he said. “I’m a big Simpsons fan myself, and maybe subconsciously it even inspired me to become a 7-Eleven owner.”
Update:Here’s the artist’s rendering of the Kwik-E-Mart around the corner from the KING 5 building in Seattle:
