I wonder if the Disney "High School Musical" folks had thought about this. They probably thought they had a one-off nothing of a show on their hands for cable. If they had put it in theaters, it turns out it would have been a hit.

Here's the thing: kids don't care if they've already seen something. Take "High School Musical." LR Daughter has watched it a jillion times. She watches it with friends. If Disney put "High School Musical" in theaters NOW it would still make money because friends would get together and see it.

We have to stop thinking about The Movie Theater as the ultimate place for quality, TV and Cable as second and direct-to-DVD as third. The model is getting bounced all over the place.

If a movie were strong enough to draw paying customers into a theater why in the world would it air first on a free channel?

"Midnight Movie House" fodder I would presume.
