Where is the ‘Simpsons’ Springfield?
Don Day July 8th, 2007
USA Today is running a unique contest that blends user-generated media, a movie promotion and a vote of its user-base. The newspaper teamed with 20th Century Fox to hold a contest among 15 towns across the US named “Springfield.” The winner gets to host a hometown premiere of the Simpson Movie. USAToday.com’s slick interface allows you to click on a town and watch a short video produced by each municipality. Some are inspired (check out Springfield, TN), some feature Ted Kennedy (Springfield, Mass.)… some are even — silent (Sprinfield, FL). Voting closes Monday.

Like I said in the last Simpsons post, all the characters are named after streets in Groening’s hometown of Portland, Oregon, such as (neighbor) Flanders, (Mayor) Quimby, (Sideshow Bob) Terwilliger, (Milhouse) Van Houton, (bully) Kearney and (reverend) Lovejoy streets, and of course there’s the (now demolished) nuclear power plant. Groening also says he was inspired by the series Father Knows Best, set in Springfield, Oregon. But since all those street references were left out, save for a brief shot of NE Flanders, I expect a more populous Springfield, or a more populous state, to win. It’s just a popular vote, after all.

Yeah, but Springfield, Tennessee had the best video!

Vermont’s video is by far the best….they’ll likely win….

The “Behind the Laughter” episode referred to the Simpsons as being a family from Northern Kentucky, and Shelbyville is about 45 miles north of Springfield, Kentucky. Also, seven miles to the west of Shelbyville is Simpsonville.
So, empirically, Kentucky wins!
(thanks, Google maps!)

Actually, it either says Kentucky or Missouri. There are two copies of the episode floating around, and I’ve seen both on TV.

if the “behind the laughter” episode says it’s springfield, kentucky, how can a contest result change it to Vermont? Please email me if u know the answer.
