Also, seven miles to the west of Shelbyville is Simpsonville. So, empirically, Kentucky wins! (thanks, Google maps!) Groening also says he was inspired by the series Father Knows Best, set in Springfield, Oregon. But since all those street references were left out, save for a brief shot of NE Flanders, I expect a more populous Springfield, or a more populous state, to win. It's just a popular vote, after all.
