WKRN’s struggle to meld new, old media

Don Day July 8th, 2007

WKRNWKRN/Nashville’s efforts to reinvent itself has been the subject of a lot of ink - but now Broadcasting & Cable is out with a story on how many of those efforts are crumbling now that GM Mike Sechrist and news director Steve Sabato are out the door. B&C suggests that the exits were due to friction between the folks leading the WKRN innovation and corporate parent Young Broadcasting. While the VJ model of news gathering isn’t expected to go away - some think NashvilleIsTalking.com and some of the station’s other digital innovations are headed for the scrap heap.

When they got back from RTNDA or NAB or one of those acryonyms all my managers were talking about was the success of WKRN and especially NiT.

They weren’t unpacked yet when this initiative started to collapse and it’s a shame because they had some great concepts there.

    Pioneers often get scalped.

did he get scalped? or was he offered up as a sacrificial lamb? (a rather large lamb, but a lamb indeed. sorry for the joke, mike!)

seems REALLY strange that right after “his” efforts stole the show (to some folks’ dismay) at rtnda, he was gone.

could it be the writing on the wall was not clear enough? it’s the rtnda, not the irtnda.

some will go to lengths to keep it as such.

all the best in your new endeavors, mike. i’m certain they’ll be great!
