Silly live shot turns into web phenom

Cory Bergman July 9th, 2007

It’s one of those things that was sorta funny on the air but hilarious on the web, especially when you play it over and over again. KGW’s Nancy Francis was doing a live interview with a ten-year-old boy at a festival in Portland, and here’s what happened…

Then it hit YouTube. And other viral video sites. It aired on Jimmy Kimmel live. Mashups appeared. And then someone started selling “I Like Turtles” merchandise. KGW just did a follow up piece (video) with the kid who said he was nervous and just blurted out the first thing that came to mind. Classic. (Thanks, Adam! Full disclosure: Belo owns KGW.com and KING5.com — my employer).

Credit where credit is due: Nancy Francis was the reporter during the original live shot. Teresa is the web producer who put the follow-up online.

Thanks, Aaron, I should’ve known that. Fixed.

    Repost -

Saw this on the Simpsons years ago.

    “I didn’t do it!”

How in the world did that become a viral video? I can understand the success of the Dramatic Prairie Dog (see url) because it was a cute animal making a funny motion/look. This kid said something odd but who cares? I didn’t even understand what he said at first. You can never predict what stupid stuff will become popular.

    Whatever.

My 6 year old daughter saw this (we live in Portland) and immediately said “That’s what Cheese from ‘Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends’ says.” (it’s a show on the “Cartoon Network”) So it’s not as if this kid was coming up with that random statement on his own (I hear her and her cousins say things like “I like pickles” all the time - another Cheese-ism).

Plus, do you know how tired I got of seeing KGW toot it’s own horn for it’s viral video? they told and re-told the story like four times on Sunday.
