Analyst speculates Apple planning cheaper iPhone

Steve Safran July 10th, 2007

An analyst at JP Morgan believes Apple has a cheaper iPhone in the works for the fourth quarter of 2007, one that would be based on the iPod Nano music player. From Reuters:

Apple filed a patent application document dated July 5 that refers to a multifunctional handheld device with a circular touch pad control, similar to the Nano’s scroll wheel.

JP Morgan analyst Kevin Chang says Apple could price the Nano-based iPhone at around $300, but that it would have fewer capabilities than the current iPhone. Meantime, another analyst believes next-gen iPods are in the works for later this year that will resemble the iPhone’s cooler aspects, but without the phone. (Thanks, Nick!)

The iPhone tear down shows the exact same Apple branded Samsung chip in the iPhone is also in the same chip already in theNano. The other tranceiver chips are small, but there is no way it can pack all into a Nano size device (maybe next week tho)… So, the question is “what goes?” Here’s your choices: Wifi receiver chip, Bluetooth receiver chip or Broadcomm mystery chip (does anyone know what it does specifically?) or any combination thereof. And, one more thing… The last chip, I think from Intel, has to stay onboard –as it powers the phone stuff. And, in the words of a wise mobile man–”it’s a phone first, stupid.”
