Reporter attends source’s pool party, later fired
Don Day July 10th, 2007
WMAQ reporter Amy Jacobson wound up on the airwaves of rival station WBBM this week. She wasn’t violating a non-compete clause — but she’s still very much out of a job. A bathing-suit clad Jacobson and her kids attended a pool partyat the home of Craig Stebic, whose wife Lisa disappeared in April. Lisa Stebic tried to have her husband evicted from their home the day before she turned up missing. Jacobson covered the Stebic story for WMAQ. WBBM aired tape of Jacobson at the party.
Update: Jason in comments left this link to Jacobson’s side of the story.

You can read Amy’s side of the story by clicking my name. Visiting potential sources houses is not unusual in off-hours of reporters. She probably shouldn’t have gone swimming with the guy, though. Crappy way to lose a job: going too far in trying to get an interview.

I’m reading a lot of spin in her side. She just so happened to be on her way to the pool with her kids, already in suits, when she gets a call from Stebic’s sister to come over and “discuss the case” at the same time that Stebic is having a pool party. Riiiight.

the “spin” that caught my eye was that she wouldn’t have been fired had it not been for that “god damn” tape.
she should talk to Don Imus.

I read in one of those articles Jacobson’s Spin #3: If it had been a male reporter, it wouldn’t have been a big deal.

Setting aside all of the ethical reasons why this was a bad idea, I can’t beleive she would put her kids in this situation.
