TiVo users can now order Amazon movies directly
Steve Safran July 10th, 2007
Starting today, TiVo owners will be able to order movies from Amazon directly on their TVs, rather than going to the Amazon website to place the order. TiVo and Amazon started partnering in March on the download program through Amazon Unbox, but it required users to place an order on the Amazon website. As of today, owners of a TiVo Series 2 or 3 with a broadband connection will be able to place that order directly on their TV, through their TiVo with a new “Buy on TV” feature.

This is a BIG deal. Here\’s the LR review I wrote of Universal Swivel Search (the piece that makes this possible) a few weeks ago: Click here

Downloaded two movies from Amazon Unbox to my TiVo before today, and today did the reverse — ordered the Unbox video from my TiVo. Flaws: No easy way to search for rental videos only from the TiVo (have to leave Unbox on TiVo and go to Universal Swivel Search, then figure out if something is a rental or a purchase). Very limited selection through the Unbox menu on TiVo. Thumbs up: The fact it works at all.
I have dumped NetFlix, but hope Amazon quickly gets the inventory of current flicks that will make it worthwhile.
