Wave buh-bye to your remote control

Don Day July 15th, 2007

When Cory came up with the Lost Remote name, I doubt he thought the content would ever focus on the actual demise of the remote. A pair of Australian engineers figured out a way to control your television without a remote device - instead allowing you to use hand signals. The product senses hand movements - making a fist, giving the thumbs up, or making the “V for victory” sign for instance. It could be on the market in three years. I can just see it now: “When you can’t find that lost remote, just use your hand instead.”

So when can we expect to see losthand dot com as a CNAME for this site?

I wonder if they’ll program a command for the middle finger.

Of course I have a “regular” tv, but what sends me scrambling for the right remote is the ability to switch the input device. I can power-up things and switch channels with all of my remotes (I believe), but my regular tv needs me to tell it that I’m switching away from television programming.

Yeah the middle finger will be used for “mute” at least during talking-heads shows.

I think “Off” would be more appropriate…

Hmmm, if you’ve spent any time studying remotes and people you’ll know that there are often multiple people watching TV at once. The remote helps to disambiguate viewers from each other and grant agency to the remote-holder. Once that is gone, you’ll see mayhem in the living room.

Oh, and people are going to freak over a camera watching them in their living room, especially if it is connected to their cable box. People already consider telcos and cable/sat big brother.

We will still be controlling our televisions remotely, but with hand gestures. I don’t know.. I think I’d still prefer using a ‘remote’ than waving my hands all over the room - more efficient.

Hand/foot gestures are better suited for gaming purposes, IMO.

    I agree.
I’d only switch to it if it were as affordable as remotes, and that’s very unlikely.
