In a snap, Grouper renamed ‘Crackle,’ Sony hopes it’ll pop
Don Day July 16th, 2007
Sony picked up one of the “little YouTubes” - Grouper - last year. Now the site has a new name: Crackle. The site is also switching direction somewhat, hoping to focus on developing new talent and content ideas. The site will keep its standard array of user-generated videos, but will use that Sony cash to pour money into ideas and talent - and use its marketing muscle to give that content a push across the web. The site will use editors to pick “best of content,” but still rely on community voting features.

And four attempts later to get it to install Flash 9 (which I already have) into the Firefox browser, it still keeps crashing on me. Snap, CRACKLE… fizz.

I’m actually glad to hear you had that experience as well Steve. I didn’t blog it because I assumed it was something I was doing wrong… even though I haven’t had trouble with Flash anywhere else. I couldn’t get it to work in Firefox or Safari for Mac.

flash 9 installed first attempt, just make sure you actually close Firefox when that pop-up appears and off ya go.

Joe: Did EXACTLY that, and a few times, too. Still no luck.

Saf: Hmm, tried those exact steps on both of my machines at work, my laptop, my dev machines and my personal desktop and they all worked just fine. What version of FF do you have installed? I think I have v2.0.0.4 installed on all of my machines.
Anyways, video looks pretty good, some interlacing issues, should be an easy fix though.

I had no problem watching the site - well in this moment it seems to be down, cause there appears an error message. Anyways I think one of the best video portals is vimeo, they just don’t have all those stolen, 1000 times watched tv-sniplets. grouper or crackle are just an attemp to copyPaste youtube…
Michelle.
