Rosie invited to be ‘Apprentice’ contestant

Don Day July 16th, 2007

NBC chief Ben Silverman told the press today that the latest edition of The Apprentice will feature celebrities - and he urged host/exec. producer Donald Trump to invite Rosie O’Donnell to appear. That’d be huuuge. Tell me you wouldn’t watch. The peacock is rounding up other big names names: fired Grey’s Anatomy star Isiah Washington will appear on Bionic Woman; Norman Lear is putting together a one-hour comedy; Jerry Seinfeld will appear on the season opener of 30 Rock as himself.

This is either a very savvy - or very unsavvy - tactic by Silverman, urging Trump to invite Rosie O. to appear in public before approaching Rosie. Given all we know of Silverman, it’s likely the former. It ensures the announcement that “The Apprentice” is back on the schedule gets picked up, along with all the other tidbits about the schedule - otherwise, who would care? I mean, it’s the headline here - over Norman Lear returning to work in one-hour comedy and Seinfeld back, albeit in a guest short, on NBC. If he were serious about truly wanting her, he wouldn’t extend the invite this way. See John Langraf’s TCA “Nip/Tuck” comments on Rosie to hear what someone who wants to be in business says about her.

But, come on: adding celebrities to a tired, expired reality format? Doesn’t matter if the lipstick’s Maybelline or Lancome - when you put it on the pig, it’s still on a pig, and I ain’t kissing it.
