Scripps buys Recipezaar

Cory Bergman July 19th, 2007

Scripps Networks, which owns the Food Network, bought the Seattle online recipe site Recipezaar for somewhere in the $25 million range. Recipezaar generates 30M monthly page views on 2.5 million uniques. Reports John Cook in the Seattle PI:

The sale of Recipezaar is a true entrepreneurial success story. Started in the Vashon Island home of the husband-and-wife team of Hakala and Gilmore, the company survived some lean years during the dot-com bust. Recipezaar never took outside capital and never spent any money on marketing, simply building through word of mouth a Web site that could help cooks exchange their favorite recipes.

Wow, good for them. I bet they’re eating well tonight.

I think I might be more envious of the fact that they live on Vashon Island than the fact that they just scored $25 million.

That just sucks…I looked forward everyday to looking at and reading the great recipes everyday. Why did they have to go and ruin a good thing? I do not like the new website.

  • 3. Brenda Morgan  |  July 23rd, 2007 at 10:07 am

I just paid $25.00 for an upgraded recipezaar membership!! I want my money back!! It’s not the same web site????? I liked the old recipezaar!!!!

What about all the recipes we had in our cookbooks. I can;’t seem to access or find anything?

  • 5. erma wall  |  July 23rd, 2007 at 10:56 am

I hate what has happened to recipezaar…..do not like the format of new site. This site was successful because of the imput from us ..the public. If we don ‘t use the site, then that’s alot of wasted money for Scripps. Why change the site if it was working. What happened to all the stored recipes? So sad.

What the heck is going on????????????? Where is recipezaar and more importantly where are MY recipes.Recipes created and photographed by me and saved to my private cookbooks. This is not a good start at all for recipezaar who posted information about the sale on their site and assured us that little was going to change. At the very least they could have informed us the loyal customers that the site was going to be down for a while. This is a great inconvenience. I cater events and need access to my recipes. So that’s money down the drain for me. Also a large part of Recipezaar’s attraction is the warm and closeknit community of cooks around the world. Cutting off our ability to communicate to people who have become friends over a shared love of cooking is cruel. I have no way now of contacting my zaar friends. Is this the treatment we can look forward to from Scripps the new owners? At the very least a curtesy message on the now non functional page of zaar could have been left to relieve the fears and anger of customers like myself. While credit is indeed due to Troy and Gay for building a succecful site it shouldn’t be forgotton that their success would not have been possible without without the loyalty of the community of zaar users.

  • 8. Zurie  |  July 23rd, 2007 at 11:13 am

What the heck is happening here?? We were not warned or told what to expect!

This is simply awful. We are all in the middle of conversations and contests and arguments and posting recipes. How could you change everything, with such a bad Home Page????

I have never seen anything this outrageous. I have paid a high price (South African Rand) to be a premium member, and this is like a kick up the ass.

Where do we go from here???

  • 9. MISSMILA  |  July 23rd, 2007 at 11:16 am

Why does Register.com keep popping up every time I try to go to recipezaar? If there is a new address for the site, what is it?

  • 10. deroche  |  July 23rd, 2007 at 11:23 am

    Hi Zurie,
A familar ‘face’! You are from the South African forum right? It’s me deroche from the Caribbean forum and some of the tag games. So I see I’m not the only one in a state of shock about this. The most hurtful part is that I can’t contact people from the site who I now consider friends….

  • 11. Karen  |  July 23rd, 2007 at 11:50 am

This is ridiculous!!!!! I use zaar every day and just paid 2 months ago for my premium membership and I have no clue what that site is supposed to be. I keep getting pop ups everywhere and it is horrible. The owners of the site are rich(and I am happy for them) but we are screwed!!!!!! UNBELIEVABLE

  • 12. Marion Cook  |  July 23rd, 2007 at 11:52 am

Did I miss something? Are they going to get with us to let us know where or what or how?
Got on to look up a recipe - and now it is all register.com - I am with the above “chef” - where are my cookbooks? my recipes?
    and where is my money?
word of mouth seemed to work only on our side - not theirs.
    I feel betrayed!

  • 13. Brenda  |  July 23rd, 2007 at 11:57 am

I agree with all the previous comments! This IS totally ridiculous!! I knew Recipezaar had been sold, but as was previously mentioned, we were led to believe there wouldn’t be such a huge change. I just went to access one of my recipes and can’t! The members of ‘Zaar should have been warned that we would not be able to access our recipes, even if it’s only temporary!! I’m just glad I didn’t renew my Premium Membership! I’m hoping this is only temporary and can understand how frustrated the ‘Premium Members’ must feel after paying $25 for an annual membership! Give us our recipes back!!

  • 14. CelestialShannon  |  July 23rd, 2007 at 11:58 am

I too am upset that the RecipeZaar site is down?? How long will it be in transition? I was in the middle of emailing my swap partners and now I have no idea how to get a hold of them and their addresses are lost? I did email the register.com and asked how long it would be down but of course no response yet.

  • 15. buster's friend  |  July 23rd, 2007 at 12:01 pm

who hijacked Recipezaar? I am a PAID “PREMIUM MEMBER” who can not access my PAID FOR data!!! There is not a bit of contact info on that garbage Register.com site. I would LOVE to know who to contact about my membership (& the gift memberships) I bought in October 2006 because this site is no longer accessible! This teaches me a lesson - I don’t lose hard copy recipes & contacts the way this PAID FOR site just vanished. This doesn’t bode well for the site in either retaining membership or usage. No email to ‘PREMIUM MEMBERS” letting us know of changes (I suppose that avoids running the risk of possible “opting out” by “Premium Members” being sold) - simple courtesy overlooked in the rush for the 25 Million, no doubt. Thanks alot, “elves”. Smells like a Microsmart tactic learned in an earlier life LOL. Shame on “Premium Members” for thinking we had a stable site, eh? Now where do I get my money back from?

  • 16. PJ  |  July 23rd, 2007 at 12:02 pm

Arggh … panic….where is RecipeZaar? I am hoping that Scripps will stay with the same format and get back online soon. I believe this site is just temporary until they iron out the details of the transaction. But what about us daily junkies? I am right in the middle of two swaps and a tag game………hurry up, Scripps. If the sight isn’t the same and/or better I’m sure there will be a lot of people quitting. Let’s hope for the best.

  • 17. deroche  |  July 23rd, 2007 at 12:11 pm

This is worst service I have recieved from any paid for site in my life. No contact email to seek redress. I am extremely pissed off.

  • 18. Marion Cook  |  July 23rd, 2007 at 12:16 pm

I called the number for register.com
was given an email address for Troy Hakala -
    troy@recipezaar.com
    and a phone humber 1 - 206 - 227 - 0733
not sure if they are good or not but I sent off an email

  • 19. Chef Vseward  |  July 23rd, 2007 at 12:31 pm

Hello everyone, I am a member of Recipezaar also. Just thought I would pass on a message from Troy. There is no reason to panic, recipezaar will be up and running the same way in no time. Hang in there ~V

Sorry, it’s a problem with Register.com and DNS. It’s fixed but will take some time for it to propagate around the world and to to be fixed for everyone. Scream if it’s not okay again in an hour.

  • 20. chelle  |  July 23rd, 2007 at 12:32 pm

Am I the only one not seeing this new change? I still have access, have not seen any interruption, and the site still appears the same to me. My recipes and cookbooks are still there. How can this be for some and not others?? One of my Zaar friends who IS having the same issue from California has contacted Troy and received this response:

Perhaps there is hope for everyone??? I sure hope so, I also really enjoy my time and the friendships I have made on Zaar. I am willing to wait and see how things “shake out”.

  • 21. Andi of Longmeadow Farm  |  July 23rd, 2007 at 12:43 pm

Hi fellow Zaar friends! Don’t worry! I have faith that Troy and our elves with fix this in no time. Just like you all, I am have projects I am working on (within Zaar) however~ although inconvenient for a bit, we will all be back soon.

Hey~it so could be worse. For some of you, I bet our friend, Amy is smiling down and so glad we are all “okay!”

See you all soon, and thanks for taking the time to read this.

Your friend from the farm~ A

  • 22. CelestialShannon  |  July 23rd, 2007 at 12:49 pm

I hope there is notice on the site for those who can reach it to let others know that some users are down..

  • 23. buster's friend  |  July 23rd, 2007 at 12:56 pm

lucky you chelle! I can’t understand why, even if no one thought of sending PAID “PREMIUM MEMBERS” an email through Recipezaar mail prior to change, there is not even a ‘redirect’ instead of going to junky Register.com & getting their crummy popups. I did call Register.com & they were reticient to share contact info, stating he didn’t know much about the site but would forward my info to…whomever. Holding my breath…
To date I still get Register.com when entering www.recipezaar.com - without the benefit of a re-direct or even ’site under construction’ (pretty SOP things to encounter in such situations - one would think, no?). Booo for a fobbed up changeover - way less gracile than the switch from the old Recipezaar site to the new version (and to think I considered that process inelegant & clunky LOL!).

  • 24. Dawnie2u  |  July 23rd, 2007 at 12:57 pm

If you google your chef name and recipezaar, you will come up with your public recipes. You need to look at the cache result in order to see the recipe.
For instance, I googled dawnie2u and recipezaar, and came up with 5 results. I had to click on something that said for more results, click here, which I did, and up came all of my public recipes from zaar. You need to look at the cached results or you won’t get the page. I hope this makes sense.

  • 25. Sherrybeth  |  July 23rd, 2007 at 1:02 pm

I’m still getting the register.com site and while I realize that it is going to take a little while for this to be fixed, a WARNING of some sort would have been nice since all the recipes I’m attempting to make for dinner are stuck in neverland.

I’m trying to have faith, but I really feel let down at the moment.

  • 26. chelle  |  July 23rd, 2007 at 1:16 pm

I am sorry that anyone is experiencing an inability to access their Zaar. I am wondering when I am going to se this “new look” to the site everyone is talking about, or have others in other areas/countries had a different version than I have? I am wondering if perhaps some of you are longer members than I am so you had a different view than I do? Maybe I only know the version you are now being converted to? Maybe I am just grasping at straws trying to understand why some are affected and not all.

I can only speak for myself, knowing that change is always a difficult thing when dealing with a large group of people, but I feel that after some reasonable amount of time passes usually we can all adapt to any change and even embrace the new format. We do not know yet that it is a final, or that there would not be any recourse, nor that we might not find an open ear amenable to our suggestions. For me personally, and I am the only one I can truly speak for, I will simply be pleased to be able to continue the friendships I have established here on Zaar and will hope to be able to have a similar level of use fromthe new one. For me, too much hostility on here may simply be a waste of time and energy, as well as putting the cart before the horse.

True, this transition may not have gone as smoothly as it could have, but we might wait to see how the site runs once they clear the glitches up, aswith ANY new computer/software. Life is too short to be angry.

Join me in a little bit of patience, my Zaar friends?? I believe the proof will truly be in the pudding (pun intended). ;)

Btw~ I will post a general message letting folks know that some Zaarites are unable to access the site due to the transition/maintenance. Hope this helps.

  • 27. Michelle S  |  July 23rd, 2007 at 1:20 pm

I cannot believe this is happening. We were all assured NO changes were going to be made. Is this the start of a new beginning? No warning, no more common courtesey that a small site held, basically right now a no NOTHING as the site is STILL not working. I also find it quite curious that Scripps has NO links to recipezaar on it’s foodnetwork site, but it has to alot of others? I thought through the press releasse they were hoping to work them off each other?

Funny how the links were IMMEDIATELY on Zaar, but not on them…..hmmm….

NOT a good sign my friends….

  • 28. saralaya  |  July 23rd, 2007 at 1:20 pm

OK… this morning I could access the site and now I can’t get anything, even the aforementioned register.com…. I just get a message saying “coming soon”….thats it! I am also a paid premium member….. this is some way to show us that everything will be “the same”…..it’s almost 4:40 PM EDT. Talk about frustration!

  • 29. kelly  |  July 23rd, 2007 at 1:25 pm

Ok - There isn’t a site change, it’s just that the site is down due to technical problems with the internet DSN servers (ie the servers that route internet traffic from one place to another). I live here in Seattle (near where the owner of the site lives) and still can’t see the regular site either. When Comcast, TimeWarner or whom-ever it is that is having the problem fixes it, we’ll all be able to see the same site we always have. The reason some of you can see it and some of you can’t depends on your location in the world and what route your browser takes to get to that site. Think of it like an airport - If I want to get to Boston, my plane might take me through Denver, but if Denver is having problems, I’d get stuck there. Where as someone coming from Miami wouldn’t need to go though Denver and therefor can still get to Boston without any problems. I hope that helps!

  • 30. kelly  |  July 23rd, 2007 at 1:28 pm

Sorry, DNS, not DSN - a little dyslexic ya know.. ;-)

  • 31. Michelle S  |  July 23rd, 2007 at 1:28 pm

Just curious…the site has been down MANY times before, but NEVER have we gotten ANYTHING like this…..and why would it say recipezaar.com is soon coming to register.com?

    It makes little sense.

  • 32. lutie  |  July 23rd, 2007 at 1:30 pm

This has been my lifeblood for my recipes as I am a caterer. All my recipes are on the Zaar and now they have put me out of business while I trusted them to be a site that was credible. Thanks for nothing!
What am I to do for my business today, tomorrow, and the rest of the week? We were used!
Maybe we should start our own site with each of our saved recipes… if you are interested, contact me @ lundici11@yahoo.com. There are some of us who value the tradition of recipes and then there are those who only are looking for the dollar.

  • 33. patti  |  July 23rd, 2007 at 2:04 pm

Take heart! My connection to recipezaar was down for a couple of hours, but now I’m back on - no more “coming soon” message…

  • 34. Marion G. Paquin  |  July 23rd, 2007 at 2:06 pm

No, this does not work. Not only that, it throws up repeated pop-ups that my pop-up blocker can’t stop. It seems to be nothing but crap and advertising, nothing at all like the old Recipezaar. I’ll keep on trying, but so far this sucks in the high 90s. Where are the community boards? Where are my recipes and cookbooks? Where is the site??? Whatever “Register” is I wish it would get out of my face and bring back Recipezaar.

  • 35. buster's friend  |  July 23rd, 2007 at 2:10 pm

It is unfortunate that there are no real avenues to contact (other than the ones posted earlier which have NOT yielded acknowlegement). I would’ve preferred a more direct communication conduit - but none was available! I paid my “PREMIUM MEMBERSHIP” fees & simply trusted the service I bought would be there. Sales happen & transition times seem to affect only the customer (my experience as long-term ATT wireless customer being “sold” to Suncom springs to mind - now a Verizon wireless customer, NEVER to return to the aforementioned two). I appreciate it when my mellow isn’t harshed by not getting services I have paid for. My mellow is greatly enhanced when the services I paid for don’t have to be hunted down & thrashed to perform for me. My $50 is but a drop in the proverbial bucket but, coming from my bucket, it is more valuable to me. It is unfortunate that all the blah, blah about “customer service” falls right away - I mean, really, any other businesspeople out there who think they have such a robust client base as to fall entirely off the internet map without a “site redirect” or “pardon our re-construction”?
As of 17:05 EST, the junky Register.com “linkfarm” with all its nasty popups is all one can access; at least from my ISP that is.

  • 36. Mrs. Duncan Mahogany  |  July 23rd, 2007 at 2:12 pm

Ummmm??? I can’t make the recipe I saved in my cookbook…….HELP!!!!!!!!!

  • 37. chelle  |  July 23rd, 2007 at 2:12 pm

Kelly- Thank you for your insight. That makes SO much sense!!! I agree with you that this will all clear up shortly.

Michelle S.- I also agree that this is a BIG frustration. I am pretty sure this is not what anyone imnvolved intended when they set this transition up. Unfortunately, snags in the smoothest plans happen. Sometimes we just have to be patient. It isn’t what we WANT, but life is imperfect, that’s the beauty in it. Patience is usually rewarded- it’s karma. Don’t misunderstand me, it is your right to be upset, and your choice how you react to it. This just seems like a small thing to sweat in the scheme of things. ;)

Lutie -I found your comment interesting about the dollar. You may be the only caterer on the planet that isn’t interested in turning a profit. A buck = a dollar. Or is it only acceptable in your frame of reference to make a profit, not for anyone else? I have a feeling that you do a great job in your business, and as you I am sure know, you cannot please all the people all the time. Somethings are beyond your control, and I am sure you would appreciate that a client would not speak poorly of you should there be a power outage during an event that they provided a kitchen for you to cook a dinner atcausing a delay in service.

I don’t think that Troy and Gay are “ONLY LOOKING FOR THE DOLLAR”. Maybe they have grown their baby as far as they wanted to and were ready to pass the responsibility on to someone else so they could enjoy the recipes and the site more than the maintenance??

    Just something to chew on.

    NOW A HAPPY THOUGHT******

I just heard from another friend that has restored access,so take heart! The drought is about over. I think everyone shall actually survive. ;)

  • 38. Michelle S  |  July 23rd, 2007 at 2:38 pm

chelle….whatever your taking, I’ll have some too please! LOL!!!

Still absolutely NO way to get into recipezaar, and it certainly sounds disheartening about all the pop ups and advertisements for those who can access it. That was one of the MAIN reasons I purchased premium membership, was to avoid ALL THAT ANNOYING GARBAGE!!!!

I am praying things have not changed, but I think the good Lord has better things to do than not worry about recipezaar.

For some people there it was not just a site, but a real community and probably the most social interaction they had on some days! (Myself included)……too bad things had to change……it’s like a death of a family member.

  • 39. kelly  |  July 23rd, 2007 at 2:38 pm

Mine’s now back up too. It’s a little slow, but that’ll work itself out too….

  • 40. buster's friend  |  July 23rd, 2007 at 2:56 pm

Michelle S - ROFLMFAO, well actually snickering at your plea as I definately had the same thought when reading Chelle’s smooooth calming missive; thanks for the laugh & wish me luck , for I’m off into the Internet for an Empanada recipe that mimicks the one I can’t get to on Recipezaar (that I bought the groceries for LOL).

  • 41. saralaya  |  July 23rd, 2007 at 2:56 pm

OK- I just got home- it’s 5:55 PM EDT and it’s BACK… hopefully to stay- it was impossible to know that it was a server problem ( at least for me..lol) b/c I just got a message at the top pf the browser window saying “coming soon”…. OK… all’s well that ends well I suppose! The website looks exactly the same as it did this morning, WHEW!

  • 42. Troy Hakala  |  July 23rd, 2007 at 3:02 pm

Hey, this is Troy! Sorry about the problems you have had accessing Recipezaar. We were trying to resolve issues related to Web “squatter” using the domain name recipezarr.com (note the misspelling), and in doing so, triggered a problem with the Domain Name Servers (DNS) that allow Recipezaar members like you to see the real site. It’s taking a little longer than anticipated to fix the problem, which should be corrected shortly, but please be patient. Oh, and this has absolutely nothing to do with the recent acquisition by Scripps Networks. It’s something we were handling on our end.

  • 43. buster's friend  |  July 23rd, 2007 at 3:24 pm

thank you Troy - perhaps a contact method for Recipezaar other than its own intranet might be helpful for “members”.

  • 44. chelle  |  July 23rd, 2007 at 3:41 pm

Thanks for clearing the air, Troy!! ;) If it makes anyone feel better, my site still looks the same as always and although perhaps a bit slower than usual, I am confident you and the “elves” are doing everything possible to get the situation resolved for us as quickly as possible. I am sure everyone can feel MUCH better now that they will not be inconvenienced more than a couple of hours worth of their $25 annual membership. ;)

Michelle S. and buster’s friend ~ glad I could make you smile in the midst of your mini crisis. ;) I’ve just learned through certain life and work experiences that situations such as this are not worth getting worked up over. There is usually a root cause (i.e. the “squatter” Troy referred to who has actually caused this issue, NOT the acquisition).

We simply have choices in life- focus on the positive or the negative in any given situation. It doesn’t change the situation, but it can improve qualityof life for you. Simply a life lesson it takes some longer to learn. ;)

I, for one, can’t wait for everyone to get back online so Zaarlife can resume as usual. ;)

DOOM on those nasty squatters…. ;)

  • 45. buster's friend  |  July 23rd, 2007 at 4:19 pm

    Chelle - errr…actually Michelle S. made me smile - honestly I found you patronizing & somewhat annoying… & still patronizing & definately more unctuously annoying :) :) :) :)

  • 46. chelle  |  July 23rd, 2007 at 4:43 pm

;) No worries Buster. Sorry if you are offended that I misunderstood your sarcasm and mistakenly accepted credit for making either of you smile. As I mentioned earlier, I was only speaking for myself and simply stated MY opinion, as I am sure YOU are doing. I really just felt like trying to lighten things up a bit as the tone of these posts seemed to be getting quite negative.

I am glad you found something in Michelle S then to smile about and hope you got the “outside” email contact you have been seeking. ;) :)

  • 47. Chef Vseward  |  July 23rd, 2007 at 5:48 pm

Thank you Troy, I knew you wouldn’t abandon us ;)

  • 48. anoymous  |  July 23rd, 2007 at 5:56 pm

Cheers Buster’s friend for having the courage to say it like it is-your comments to chelle made me laugh. I am one of those affected and although the site is back up now it is now running too slowly for me with my dialup to use it. It’s like watching paint dry. One thing chelle got right was that it it is my right to get upset. While I find it hard to belive the squatter story ( are we then too to look out to further problems from recioezaar site-note close spelling:-0 … I’m no techie so clueless to how these things go. In the end tho it’s not the site downtime that has me upset or but the inconvenience, and the fact that there was absolutely no way to contact anyone about the problems I was experiencing. I hope that buster’s friend’s comments about there needing to be a contact method other than zaars internet site is taken seriously as I feel that that was the real problem here today.

    Answer to the statement made:
It makes one wonder how much stock your portfolio has in Scripps Network. Read again, sweet one, what I said. You skipped the word, “only”; it changes the meaning of what I said. FYI
I did have an off-site wedding for 400 where all the electricity went out for over 24 hours and I still managed to have all the food hot, delicious, and ready for my clients … it is called “Professionalism” and when someone depends upon me, they know that I am ready for all things thrown at me… even your attempt at sarcasm. My clients have my business phone, my cell phone, and my home phone numbers. Being able to be reached at all times is the sign of a reputable business.

So, “chelle”, maybe you are not familiar with what the term “professional” is, but it means that your customer, client, et al, is always the most important. It is sweet that you are such a positive person, but one who takes money for something should always be prepared to properly take care of any situation to the client’s satisfaction.

It is amazing what some internet companies do to hide from their customers, but one must also look at their mental maturity. They can pull the plug whenever they wish; we found that out today. Enough said.

we have started another recipe site: it is @ “betweenthebestcooks@yahoogroups.com”
join us and when our web site is up, we will

Has everyone been able to get their recipes back? I got onto recipezaar for the first time today and was able to access recipes but I couldn’t open anyones cookbooks…do you think that’s my lack of tech ability or could it be something to do with the site? How do you think they will integrate Food Network and recipezaar?

You now need to be a Premium Member in order to print out a recipe.

Recipezaar is a FUCKING joke now.

Notice Food Network talent pumping their shitty recipes at TGIF’s and Applebee’s, same idea. They just want to feed us shit and overcharge us for it, or assign exorbitant values to public information.

Recipezaar was as “kick in the ass” from the get go! It’s palgued by arrogant worker bees that even Scripps can’t drone out. The endeavor to be “everything to everybody” has been a boom to bust “recipe” for disaster from the first .com to launch. Recipezaar was there, is there, and will be there. Even Scripps cannot put a spine back into a broken backed camel. If you want “quality”, and not just a brainbusting slab of “quantity” check out Chowhound.com, or any of many non-braingushing websites. Scripps may be able to make it work, but that’s doubtful with current employees, staff, and attitudes. Just go there…..basque in the “sites” of MEGA online MEDIA, or fork up your $25/yr for the “burden” of what they do best…..suck your pockets dry, and avail you to tons of material that’s totally free on the web….even without all the commercial crap. ‘Zaar sold out, and they sold out BIG. They have now done their latest “upgrade” and it’s atrocious! What’s that thingy about pride coming/going before the fall? You can buy a CD to organize your recipes for 1/2 the cost of one yearly membership, do it “your way”, and cut Scripps right out of your pocketbook. Urrghhhh! Corporations looking to make my life entrapped and more complicated……I’m confused….LOL! Bettcha Scripps dumps this baby within a year as a loss. You just simply can’t “make a silk purse out of a sows ear”.

Congrats Troy!! It is really cool to see an old high school make a real name for himself. I wish you and your family the best.
