Scripps buys Recipezaar

Scripps Networks, which owns the Food Network, bought the Seattle online recipe site Recipezaar for somewhere in the $25 million range. Recipezaar generates 30M monthly page views on 2.5 million uniques. Reports John Cook in the Seattle PI:

The sale of Recipezaar is a true entrepreneurial success story. Started in the Vashon Island home of the husband-and-wife team of Hakala and Gilmore, the company survived some lean years during the dot-com bust. Recipezaar never took outside capital and never spent any money on marketing, simply building through word of mouth a Web site that could help cooks exchange their favorite recipes.

Wow, good for them. I bet they’re eating well tonight.

  1. Has everyone been able to get their recipes back? I got onto recipezaar for the first time today and was able to access recipes but I couldn’t open anyones cookbooks…do you think that’s my lack of tech ability or could it be something to do with the site? How do you think they will integrate Food Network and recipezaar?

  5. You now need to be a Premium Member in order to print out a recipe.

Recipezaar is a FUCKING joke now.

Notice Food Network talent pumping their shitty recipes at TGIF’s and Applebee’s, same idea. They just want to feed us shit and overcharge us for it, or assign exorbitant values to public information.

  6. Recipezaar was as “kick in the ass” from the get go! It’s palgued by arrogant worker bees that even Scripps can’t drone out. The endeavor to be “everything to everybody” has been a boom to bust “recipe” for disaster from the first .com to launch. Recipezaar was there, is there, and will be there. Even Scripps cannot put a spine back into a broken backed camel. If you want “quality”, and not just a brainbusting slab of “quantity” check out Chowhound.com, or any of many non-braingushing websites. Scripps may be able to make it work, but that’s doubtful with current employees, staff, and attitudes. Just go there…..basque in the “sites” of MEGA online MEDIA, or fork up your $25/yr for the “burden” of what they do best…..suck your pockets dry, and avail you to tons of material that’s totally free on the web….even without all the commercial crap. ‘Zaar sold out, and they sold out BIG. They have now done their latest “upgrade” and it’s atrocious! What’s that thingy about pride coming/going before the fall? You can buy a CD to organize your recipes for 1/2 the cost of one yearly membership, do it “your way”, and cut Scripps right out of your pocketbook. Urrghhhh! Corporations looking to make my life entrapped and more complicated……I’m confused….LOL! Bettcha Scripps dumps this baby within a year as a loss. You just simply can’t “make a silk purse out of a sows ear”.

  8. What a bunch of drama queens! I just read through this tread, albeit a bit late, but I am embarrassed to know some of you people!

The site was down, not shut off. Good Lord, do you act like this when your electric goes out? Or your cell tower? Or your phone? Give me a break!

Talk about a bunch of OVERREACTIONS. It is a website, not your oxygen supply. Geeze, you guys need to get a life!
