Another news helicopter crashes

Don Day July 30th, 2007

Dallas Fox affiliate KDFW’s chopper crash-landed this morning - just days after a fatal accident in Phoenix killed four people aboard two news helicopters. This time, the station is calling it a “emergency landing” - but the pictures make it look much worse. Three people were onboard — and all made it out OK.

Auto-rotation landings on rough or sloped surfaces often result in the aircraft’s rolling over. Calling this a “crash landing” is incorrect and smacks of the same hysteria viewers complain about in local TV newscasts.

Either way, I’m thankful that everyone is safe. I wish the Phoenix crash had turned out that way. There are a lot of hurt, heartbroken people out here.

Uh, Brink? If a viewer looks at the pictures, what do you think they’ll call it?

They’ll call it a crash. And since it happened while landing, as opposed to the Phoenix crash, it would be considered a crash landing.

A full salute to Curtis Crump, who masterfully landed the chopper and averted disaster. Call it a hard landing, a crash or whatever - Mr. Crump kept his cool and saved his passengers.

I’m guessing they’ll skip this police chase that is happening now…

I don’t think helicopters should be allowed to carry pasengers if they are doing bussiness
