MySpace News still a snooze

Don Day July 31st, 2007

Just because a company with a big marketing muscle and good track record tries something… doesn’t mean it will work. MySpace put its “News” section into beta several months ago, and is featuring it with ads on the MySpace homepage and a link in the new “toolbox” section. Despite this, I still have not seen a single item with votes in the double digits. The site is set up much like Digg… except that it isn’t nearly as active - and the MySpace community doesn’t seem to see a need for this type of feature. Check it out for yourself

Maybe they should do something more like the Facebook news feed rather than Digg…

Seriously, you can get national news anywhere.

In my view MySpace News is one of the biggest product launch failures of the year.

For instance, can anyone tell me what the difference is between ranking and voting for stories, for instance? If 100 people vote a story as one person (star?) does that elevate that story to the front page, where it theoretically gets more exposure?

My idea for this product: forget actual “news.” Integrate the social news engine into the heart and soul of MySpace, the profile experience. Let people vote for and rank profiles, images, blog posts, etc. and make this functionality available through the profile. Let people embed slices/dices of voting results as a widget and I think you’ll have a big winner on your hands.
