ESPN360 to relaunch with live focus

Cory Bergman August 7th, 2007

Coming next month, ESPN will relaunch its video site ESPN360 with plans to stream 2,000 live events over 12 months — up from 200 last year. “You cannot underestimate the value of putting live sports on the Internet,” said Dan Flagler, manager of online video content and programming for Verizon Communications, which is partnered with ESPN360. But the big question remains: does ESPN360’s cable-like ISP strategy — only Verizon and AT&T broadband subscribers can access the site, limiting ESPN360’s audience to 16 million — limit its ultimate potential? I’m a freelancer that sometimes works for a 360 production. Even though they are scaled back on crew and equipment it’s still a costly production per game. Mostly they choose venues according to local subscribers. So if it’s a dominant Cox area, there’s a chance mom and dad across the country won’t see their kid playing hockey on “TV.”

BTW - I’m a Cox subscriber, I’ve never been able to watch.

Can we face up to the fact that “relaunch” is an admission of business and strategic plan failure.

And also face up the reality that “relaunch” carries an incredible cost to the relaunchers bottom line.

It’s not business as usual and a case of “gee, isn’t that neat, they have a relaunch.” It is painful and costly.

II LR is to be an honest voice of what’s going on in the worlds of 2.0 and 3.0, it needs to be an honest voice.

    Honest.

It’s not only Verizon and AT&T subscribers that have access. I have Charter and I have it.
