Don Day August 9th, 2007

The Wall Street Journal’s Deal Journal blog speculates that Gannett Co. Inc. could be sold soon. The nation’s largest newspaper publisher - and owner of more than 20 TV stations made a recent filing with the SEC that could signal a management buyout. The company is trading near a ten-year low, and is down 23% this year.

i thought the ’specualtion’ over at B&C (mike malone’s piece) was pretty interesting too… from a web perspective.

It sounds like Gannett is definately planning a sale. NewsVisual is also saying that GE is probably the most likely make an offer for Gannett, and they’ve got some evidence that may validate the rumor. There are some pretty good board ties between the companies, and one of Garrett’s directors, Arthur Harper, was head of one of GE’s divisions until 2006 (see linked article).

It’d be great if the company was bought and went private. I think news companies do a much better job for the public when they are not focused on stockholder value.
