Philly.com joins Yahoo newspaper consortium

Cory Bergman August 16th, 2007

The Philadelphia Inquirer and the Daily News are joining the newspaper alliance with Yahoo, bringing the total to 19 publishing companies and close to 400 newspapers. “The open nature of the partnership between the newspapers and Yahoo has made this the solution of choice for the newspaper industry,” Hilary Schneider, executive vice president at Yahoo, said in a statement.

thread hijack: why isn’t there a broadcast consortium?

Some context since the only news from this came from a press release from Yahoo… (last quote is the best)

Other things Hilary Schneider has said…. (I was present for a couple of these…)

“The name of a site doesn’t matter” OK, then why did Sunspot.net (that SHE created) fail only to be replaced by Baltimoresun.com. I thought the name did not matter?

“There will only be one URL supported” to a group at a MAJOR daily newspaper that owned the city.com url AND the newspaper.com url but would not be allowed ot even point the city.com at the, oh, entertainment section! (Instead it went unused for three years! There goes that possible market exposure in a top entertainment city)

“Sure” to sinking MILLIONS into Tribe.net while heading Knight Ridder Digital. (Truth: she might have said “yes” or “ok”)

THE KEY QUOTE SAID WITH HER CURRENT TITLE WITH YAHOO as vice president for local markets (that title IS her title, but is rarely used by for soon-to-be obvious reasons by Yahoo — but it is used by a couple news outlets)

“I would say we have a long way to go,” at a conference iin March with this as the context: The untapped “regional local” online ad market consists of 85,000 businesses with an adspend potential of $48.3 billion, said Ms. Schneider. The “local local” market is estimated at 22 million businesses with a total of $33.6 billion to spend. (Credit Leah Messinger in an article HEADLINED “Yahoo! exec: Local Web ad market has $80B potential ” Publication unknown… sorry…)

Hmmm… After reading that, tell me that Yahoo has no eye on the local, local market that the newspapers ALSO get their $$ from the same source….

I can’t believe she was allowed to be caught in public saying the last item about “local, local” markets.

Part of me wonders about maybe those early not-so-smart statements and if they are just to throw us off about how shred she is…. could she think that far ahead???

    Yahoo?

One note: She *joined* Yahoo last Fall, charged with the mission of developing “new ways of monetizing transaction listings across Yahoo” (that might be from a Yahoo release or from her directly– not able to source it)
