‘Millennials’ turned to Web for Virginia Tech coverage

Michael Gay August 20th, 2007

Frank N. Magid Associates have released the latest in their series of research on the media usage of “Millennials,” 18- to 29-year-olds. The study, reported by TV Week, cited Yahoo as being the number one news source for Millennials after the initial news of the Virginia Tech shootings. CNN followed, then cnn.com and FOX News. Take note, 2 of the top 4 sources for coverage were websites. The story also points out that word of mouth was actually the way 29% of Millennials learned of the shooting, but text messaging was included in word of mouth. I wish they had broken that out separately, as I suspect texting is increasingly becoming the way younger audiences spread news.

Talk to any “kid” with a cell phone and you’ll find that they use it primarily to text with. The only calls they get are from their parents. You are right about texting becoming the way these future demo’s in waiting are and will learn about breaking news.

Sometimes when I hear the words “Magid” and “Web” I want to get my hearing checked. Other times I shudder.

    Why do kids text?

I can speak much faster than I can type (so can most humans) on a phone and the response time is zero, unlike waiting for a text reply.

If they like “instant gratification,” texting isn’t the way.

I remember that it was a HUGE story/discussion on Facebook.

Not only is it how “they” are communcating…media used it to localize the story in other markets. In Tallahassee, they sent out a text to their Breaking News sub group looking for a connection. A father of a local girl responded.
Since, many media orgs have added a message category specifically for their local universities.
