Not only is it how "they" are communcating...media used it to localize the story in other markets. In Tallahassee, they sent out a text to their Breaking News sub group looking for a connection. A father of a local girl responded.
Since, many media orgs have added a message category specifically for their local universities.

Why do kids text?

I can speak much faster than I can type (so can most humans) on a phone and the response time is zero, unlike waiting for a text reply.

If they like "instant gratification," texting isn't the way.

Sometimes when I hear the words "Magid" and "Web" I want to get my hearing checked. Other times I shudder.

Talk to any "kid" with a cell phone and you'll find that they use it primarily to text with. The only calls they get are from their parents. You are right about texting becoming the way these future demo's in waiting are and will learn about breaking news.
