Embeddable Google maps now live

Cory Bergman August 21st, 2007

As we previewed earlier this week, Google Maps now come with copy-paste code to embed anywhere you’d like. Click “link this” on any map to get the code.

I whipped this up in 10 seconds. This is KING 5’s address in Seattle.

Adds BuzzKill in comments below: “For news sites, and even LR, wouldn’t the embed violate the Google Maps term and conditions? … ‘For business users, Google Maps is made available for your internal use only and may not be commercially redistributed, except that map data may be accessed and displayed by using the Google Maps API pursuant to the API terms and conditions.’ This doesn’t really seem like a developer API code kind of thing.”

I wonder if they are still working through some bugs. I tried this earlier in the day and the maps I embedded didn’t have the arrow or bubble showing up in the embed, just the map itself.

The best way to map multiple points is to make a map in My Maps (click the tab on the left side of the Google Maps interface). There you can create a public map and put as many points as you want before you embed.

I’m thrilled this is now released. I’m guessing we’ll see a ton of sites adopt these now.

    FINALLY!!!

Anybody who doesn’t replace their static maps with interactive maps like this just doesn’t get it. Users can click “Get directions to here” to get personalized directions.

Note to advertiers: promote women-only products on the “Get directions to here” page… guys will never use this app; we never ask for directions.

For news sites, and even LR, wouldn’t the embed violate the Google Maps term and conditions?

I would’ve pasted a link, but the spam filter and I are having a disagreement right now:

“For business users, Google Maps is made available for your internal use only and may not be commercially redistributed, except that map data may be accessed and displayed by using the Google Maps API pursuant to the API terms and conditions.”

This doesn’t really seem like a developer API code kind of thing.

I’m having issues too, Michael. One map at one address embedded just fine — the second map at a different location had the exact problem you describe…

Mr. Kill, I’ll call you Buzz. I thought the same thing too, but the enterprise and business uses they describe seem to deal with intranets or private websites not available to the public. They don’t want Google Maps being used by a company to plot the location of your delivery trucks, unless you’re paying them.

I do agree they need to have some Terms posted about embedding, as that is not specifically spelled out. It seems they added the feature, but didn’t adequately adjust the legal wording with the new capabilities.

Google’s embeddable maps are a great and long-needed feature. It is, however, causing problems with TypePad blogs. Click my name to read how.
