This Onion story is so wrong

Cory Bergman September 10th, 2007

You’ll cringe while you watch it, but in reality, it’s taking some of today’s sensational TV crime coverage (like Nancy Grace) just one step further. Don’t say you weren’t warned. Here’s “Missing Girl Probably Raped” from The Onion.

It’s no “further” than what we already see.

I always wonder what the parents of missing people on “Nancy Grace” feel like as she — just as in this Onion piece — cruelly describes semen stains, blood stains, what the woman would look like were she in the woods dead for weeks. It’s truly horrific. The Onion story almost doesn’t go far enough to satirize what Nancy Grace does on a nearly daily basis. Also, this one hasn’t caused anyone to commit suicide! Nancy Grace can’t say that.

You know, I saw the piece and thought “Nah, I better not.” But I’m glad you did, Bergman. It’s thisclose to the truth. So much so that if you showed it to some folks without the Onion banner, they’d believe it was real…

On the other hand, you can’t satirize Nancy. Self-parody’s impossible to top.

    Unbelievable…and yet, totally believable.

    Horrible….yet routine.

    So Nancy, yet so Grace.

Highlight from yesterday’s Nancy Grace discussion on Madeleine McCann: NANCY: “Oh, you mean like gas, the body starts emitting gas as it decomposes?” Classy, Nance.
