FOX launching local MyMusic sites
Michael Gay September 11th, 2007
FOX Interactive Media and a few FOX O&O’s have launched a few local music websites in connection with MySpace. The sites are an experiment to see if there is an audience for content that focuses on local bands, concerts and fans. The first round of sites include mymusictwincities, mymusicboston and mymusichouston, with MySpace pages for each (example). The sites include streaming audio, video of performances, concert calendars and links to the bands’ MySpace pages. It’s kind of a flashback to what was a key to the success of MySpace.
There is no official press release or details on the project. I’m told these sites are just a test before there is a decision to roll it out wider. I hadn’t even heard about these sites until the local FOX station here in Minneapolis started running promos for a “Battle of the Bands” contest. Take a look and if you have more information about the project, drop me an e-mail.

Moldy . . . if you’re right, it’s probably an indication of another element of the MYFOX platform going unnoticed. Seams they like to rolll out a new bell or whistle every other week, while the presentation of the original product - - the news- remains lame.

Thsi project seems odd considering FOX already has something like this. I can’t remember the name at the moment. Oh, wait . . . MYSPACE!!!!!!

It’s a smart move. If I was going to pick a local vertical to launch nationally, it would be music.
The music industry is in flux, and there are a lot of opportunities for growth. The local ad base for music can be substantial, and it’s a topic that has a strong connection for both local and national readers. And it appeals to a much younger audience than the typical broadcast TV web site reader.
BTW, I understand that Fox has another vertical about ready to launch quietly by the end of the year.

I don’t care what they do, I still can’t get past their amateur graphics; those tabs looked like a blind 5th grader made them.

As a blind 5th grader I am offended by your comment. I like the look and the site.
