It takes a brave man to compliment the ads on his site

Steve Safran September 14th, 2007

Have you checked out the Sprint ads that cycle through on the right of LR? Pretty good. Fast, funny, and - I have to say - clever. They’re part of their “Waitless” campaign - ideas to save you time in your life. Now keep in mind that our ads are sold by Federated Media, so we have no idea what’s going to go into that space. We’ve also dissed ads that have appeared there, and so we’re not trying to suck up. (Much.) No - I think the Sprint ads are an excellent example of “advertising as entertainment.” I went through a bunch of their quick videos, and spent time on their site. That’s worth pointing out on the rare occasions that it happens.

Agreed. Clicked through to their site from here and I wasted a good 15 minutes going through the different clips.

Though I still can’t get the hang of speed tying my shoes.

Those are sheer genius. (The “Turbo Parking” one worries me a little, though.)

Thing is, I would never have clicked on one if you hadn’t drawn attention to it…

Hey — if it’s good, there’s nothing wrong with mentioning it. It’s all part of the ecosystem now, isn’t it? Might as well comment on it.

Now that I think about it, consider the “news” stories that run from time to time talking about particular commercials and their popularity or repulsiveness or whatever. How much print has been spilled over the GEICO cavemen and their new upcoming video series?

Smoke ‘em if ya got ‘em…

Steve (and M Gorman, John Proffitt and Swift Loris) — Chas here, FM’s publisher. It warms my heart to read this post and comments. We don’t always get it right, but we’re trying our darnedest to find marketers who want to add to the reader experience readers at sites like LR. In Sprint (and their agencies, Goodby and Mindshare), we’ve found a committed partner!

I have to admit, I’ve watched the videos, too. I didn’t click through to the site on principle, though.

That’s funny, I never noticed it until you pointed it out. Now I’m addicted to their site.
