Beta allows users to embed ESPN video
Steve Safran September 30th, 2007
Check out the new ESPN.com video beta - they’ve stopped the popup page and put the video onto an easier-to-navigate (and whitespace-aplenty) page. They’re also making videos available for embedding, a la YouTube, by proving the embed code right next to the video. Locals: you need to do this. Demand that your vendors start developing the ability for your videos to be shared this way. If they won’t do it, find someone who will. In celebration of this achievement, I’m embedding ESPN’s preview of the MNF game between the Patriots and the Bengals.
UPDATE, 10/2/09>: Patriots 34 - Bengals 13.

Not all videos are embed.

I’m trying to get our station to do this as well. It’s a slow process, but I give lots of props to our New Media dept. to being so responsive instead of dismissing the idea outright.

@Greg: There will be rights issues with syndicating some of the content. The important part is that they’re making the tech available on the video where there are no rights issues - mostly their own original-generated stuff.
@Hussman: Well done.

It’s actually not just the embed that is critical. It’s the option to watch more videos at the end that is excellent. Hey, get them once… great. Get them to watch two or three videos from you, and they might actually remember who the hell you are by the time the third one rolls around.

unfortunately, it looks like the popup is still there. whenever i play an embedded espn video (including the one on your site), a popup appears which contains a small (5×5 pixel) blank gif image. what’s the deal with that?
how can i get around this?
thanks
