Star Wars spinoff planned for TV

Director George Lucas is bringing the Force to a TV near you with a live action show that is in the works. Lucas told the LA Times the show will not include the films’ major characters Luke Skywalker or Darth Vader. And this is a perfect opportunity for us to revive this Web classic:

Idea Lab blog launched for Knight News Challenge winners

Knight Foundation’s News Challenge contest winners are blogging on a new group blog launched by PBS called the MediaShift Idea Lab blog. Each of the 36 bloggers won a grant in the Knight News Challenge to help fund a startup idea or to blog on a topic related to reshaping community news. The writers will use the Idea Lab to explain their projects, share intelligence and interact with the online community, according to a press release. There’s already a must-read article from Jay Rosen titled “Ready? Here’s My Own Formula for Success With an Online News Site.”

Gannett buying HighSchoolSports.net

Another media company is joining the game called High School Sports. Gannett has acquired HighSchoolSports.net as their way into the game. We’ve covered the launches from the other media companies, including Hearst-Argyle (my company), Belo (Cory and Don’s company), FOX, CBS, and Cox. According to Broadcasting and Cable, HighSchoolSports.net claims to have more unique visitors than any other school-sports site. “When partnered with Gannett’s local newspapers, television stations and Web sites, HighSchoolSports.net will offer national and local advertisers an exciting, best-of-class vehicle to reach teens and parents,” Gannett Digital president Jack Williams said in a statement.

Analog TVs gone from Best Buy

Best BuyThis is a sure sign the DTV transition date is approaching. Best Buy has pulled all analog TVs from their store shelves, and will begin selling the new converter boxes in January. Do you hear that sound? That’s the Geek Squad licking the digital chops since so many HDTV users don’t know how to set up their TV.

CNN.com anchor promoted to American Morning

Veronica De La CruzVeronica De La Cruz, from the CNN.com Desk, will be a new face on CNN’s American Morning newscast. I’ve seen Veronica several times anchoring the “Now in the News” webcast on cnn.com, so it’s exciting to see someone promoted from the digital side to the broadcast.
