Murdoch: Killing the NY Times “would be nice”

Don Day October 18th, 2007

News Corp. CEO Rupert Murdoch has big plans for the Wall Street Journal once he lands control of the paper in coming months. He wants to amp up non-financial news coverage, including national, international, arts and culture. A reporter asked if he wanted to kill the New York Times. As the headline alludes, he simply answered “that would be nice.”

In Murdochs Austrailians dreams. His newspaper will be just like the post a rag….

Maybe it doesn’t need to be killed, but it does need to be challenged. Gotten lazy…too much group-think going on in that operation. A robust competitor can only be a good thing from a public information p.o.v. I expect journalistic standards at the WSJ will remain at least as robust as at the Times. Come to think of it, not a very high bar anymore, sadly.

Competition from MSNBC was good for CNN? With Britney, Anna Nicole, etc, it seems more like a race to the bottom.
