Fox Biz blasts CNBC’s infomercials… plays more infomercials

Don Day October 20th, 2007

A little side topic here - but something I found funny. Execs for the new Fox Business Network have been talking about how CNBC was loaded with infomercials. References to the heavy paid programming load of the older business network have appeared in Broadcasting & Cable, the NY Times and on TVNewser. I was interested to see how FBN would fill weekends and overnights without tons of paid programming avails. Quick answer? They aren’t. According to the Fox Business schedule, the network runs 46 hours of paid programming per week - including five hours each weekday (midnight to 5am) and 21 total on the weekend. CNBC runs 35 hours per week - two hours each weekday (midnight to 2am) and 25 hours per weekend.

Not to excuse FBN, but CNBC has been around for a long time now and could have fleshed out their schedule more. I don’t know of any channel that launches without hours and hours of paid programming. However, that is usually all but replaced within a couple of years. And with the fabled “corporate synergy” between NBC units, you would think there would be more on CNBC’s schedule that has to do with business and/or NBC.

    It’s just like the Republicans.
    Say one thing, do another.
    Surprised? Not me.
Their network feels like Fox News but even worse.
They constantly make fun of Democratic positions
in the middle of their so-called Business news
    coverage. That’s neutral? That’s balanced?
    Surprised? Not really.
    It’s Just Fox.

Considering that FNC’s slogan, “Fair and Balanced” has become a catch-phrase despite the fact that it is neither, you can’t be surprised that FBN would complain about a competitor doing something that it does also.
