AOL is buying the ad serving company Quigo for $340 million to become more competitive against Yahoo! and Google. Following Google’s acquisition of DoubleClick and Microsoft picking up aQuantive, the M&A market for ad tech companies is where it is at. Just as we’ve been preaching here forever, the ability to offer self-service ad solutions is the key to harnessing the power of distributed content production online. Quigo has cool technology that offers advertisers a more direct relationship with publishers.

One of my students at AU tipped me off to this incredibly cool thing being done inside Halo. “This Spartan Life” is a talk show that is produced entirely within the game environment. And just to be even more edgy, the latest episode interviewed the host of NPR’s Studio 360. Live machinima, awesome. Thanks, Sarah!

PaidContent reports that NBC SVP Ron Lamprecht said the company is having “ongoing discussions” with YouTube about possibly bringing back its channel or programming in some way. But, Lamprecht quickly added that the focus is on Hulu right now.

From an article by NYTimes’ Jacques Steinberg, “Riding a ratings wave from ‘Countdown With Keith Olbermann,’ a program that takes strong issue with the Bush administration, MSNBC is increasingly seeking to showcase its nighttime lineup as a welcome haven for viewers of a similar mind. Lest there be any doubt that the cable channel believes there is ratings gold in shows that criticize the administration with the same vigor with which Fox News’s hosts often champion it, two NBC executives acknowledged yesterday that they were talking to Rosie O’Donnell about a prime-time show on MSNBC.”
UPDATE: Rosie writes on her blog she won’t be doing a show on MSNBC.
