Safran leaving Lost Remote

Cory Bergman November 11th, 2007

I’m very sad to announce that our own Steve Safran has decided to step down from his blogging post as managing editor here at Lost Remote. As many of you know, Steve has been with the site from nearly the beginning. For seven years now (seven years!), he’s educated, enlightened and entertained Lost Remote’s readers with his terrific insight and wit. But most of all, he’s helped pave the way for how technology is changing television. Remember, nobody listened to us then, and it certainly wasn’t popular to blog about it. But Steve volunteered countless hours on Lost Remote and helped prepare an industry for incredible change, and I can’t thank him enough for everything he’s done.

Of course, these changes are far from over, and Steve’s increasingly busy schedule at AR&D is a key reason why he’s stepping down. Yet he promises to still post a blurb and write a snarky comment from time to time (watch out, tdc!) But day in and day out — I think all of you will agree — we’ll miss him on Lost Remote, big time.

We’ll miss your take Safran… and the rest of us will have to pick up the slack. Cory’s going to owe us all more beer.

    Cheers!

Steve’s posts helped me kick my drug habit. I now have to go back to crack. Oh well…

  • 5. Rob  |  November 9th, 2007 at 2:34 pm

    Well that sucks.

I’ve learned and taken to heart a lot of things that Saf has posted here and many an e-mail have been sent up to my bosses about the future of the web that were cut and pasted musings from Steve posted here at L-R.

Your check is in the mail Steve. :D

    Steve,

You’ve helped a bunch of us figure out this Internet thing and in turn made a lot of TV Web sites better.

Keep up with the good work at AR&D!

Yeah, Steve — I’ve enjoyed our back and forths and I’ve learned a lot. Hopefully, you’ll still be around to make comments, I’m sure LR is a bad habit to break, but I’m kind of sad that you’ve never once posted about Tom Bergeron and that you won’t be around to defend your use of southern colloquialisms.

Good luck, have fun and keep passing open windows.

Steve a BIG thanks…see you down the road…

I’ll echo the others in saying that your writing will be missed here.

StevieSaf - A big loss for LR. We will miss your wit and wisdom. Good luck in all you do

  • 11. ~bc  |  November 9th, 2007 at 4:19 pm

Steve - are you going to have your own blog at all? Would be a shame to totally loose your voice from the conversation…

  • 12. Kid3  |  November 9th, 2007 at 4:24 pm

    Who gets the kids?

  • 13. Terry Heaton  |  November 9th, 2007 at 4:26 pm

LR’s loss is my, um, gain? It’s heartening to see all this support, Steve. Thanks for the memories…and for the ones yet to come.

  • 14. david johnson  |  November 9th, 2007 at 6:19 pm

Heaton! I should have known it was you. Henceforth your name will be uttered with the same inflection as ‘Newman’ in the halls of OneLR.

Saf, you better make good your threat to keep haunting. Your comments to my rants help me remember that going around the bend is the path to glory.

    See you on the road.

    what snarky comments?

don’t friends always banter back and forth over beers?

mr. safran, cheers! and as they say here “mahalo, braddah”

  • 17. Charles  |  November 9th, 2007 at 8:01 pm

That definately sucks for us. Good luck on your continued adventures, Safran.

  • 18. Bill Snead  |  November 9th, 2007 at 8:06 pm

No slight intended…but no loss. All I’ve seen from Safran is parroting of what others say. He does provide a way to read Jarvis’ blog without having to suffer through the bloviation of actually reading it though. We at least owe him thanks for that.

“no slight intended… but no loss”

keep that guy away from the punchbowl unless you like the flavor of piss.

Well, as you know Steven, as in life, all good things must come to an end…….but how can you leave in the middle of the Patriots going for history, the Celtics reborn, and of course, the start of the World Series Trophy Tour throughout all of New England and the World - hope to bump into you at the Garden. Best of luck, Jeff

  • 21. Frank Catalano  |  November 10th, 2007 at 4:30 am

Even though we didn’t always agree (both when I was an LR blogger and afterwards when I snarked from the comments section after I left broadcasting), Safran’s observations were always lively and interesting. His POV will be missed on LR.

(And Cory’s gonna be really busy populating those pixels.)

Best wishes, Steve, in your full-time life, and perhaps we’ll see each other in Boston.

  • 22. Chris Rooney  |  November 10th, 2007 at 6:46 am

Steve, LR just won’t be the same. Thanks for everything and don’t be a stranger!

  • 23. W  |  November 10th, 2007 at 9:30 am

    Newm… er, Heaton!

My question: Is Safran’s IPO share now up for grabs?

  • 24. LIZ  |  November 10th, 2007 at 9:54 am

    nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

lr will not be the same! end of an era!

  • 25. Swift Loris  |  November 10th, 2007 at 11:12 am

    Alas! Woe is we!

Best wishes, Steve. It’s been real.

  • 26. coffee  |  November 11th, 2007 at 8:07 am

But….but…..ethereal hearth……but….. Thanks for the writing and I’ll look forward to the snark. Hey, that’d be a good campaign slogan. Looking forward to the snark.

Hey Steve, one day when you get really rich, and you buy an island with your really-rich money, will you invite me to hang out? Perhaps we could watch the Pats and the Cowboys in the Super Bowl on the 42-FOOT big screen that you’ll buy for the house on your island.

We’ll miss you here Steve. You’re gonna do great.

  • 29. Gorman  |  November 11th, 2007 at 4:15 pm

Best of luck. Your regular $.02 donations will be missed.

  • 30. Rocker  |  November 12th, 2007 at 7:38 am

Just checked my calendar…nope, it’s not April 1. Is this for real? Really having a hard time imagining LR without you Steve. You’re part of the DNA….even if I don’t always agree with you, you never fail to be thought-provoking. And that’s the whole point.

  • 31. Alyssa  |  November 12th, 2007 at 8:29 am

So sad to hear about Steve’s departure. If it hadn’t been for LR and Steve, I don’t think I’d be where I am today.

  • 32. mike  |  November 12th, 2007 at 9:00 am

This is indeed sad news but as Steve would point out life is all about change especially in our industry. Thanks for everything you have done Steve.

  • 33. Safran  |  November 12th, 2007 at 4:42 pm

Well, thank you everyone. I’ll write a suitably long farewell full of false modesty and self-aggrandizement shortly.

For now, I want to thank you - the commentors - who truly make LR what it is. A great place to share great ideas. No, we don’t always agree. That’s the point. It would be frightening if we always agreed. That would mean we weren’t putting out any risky ideas.

When Bill Berry left R.E.M., he said that he now got to be “the world’s biggest R.E.M. fan.” I feel the same way about LR. So I’ll be haunting these pages, possibly posting under some obnoxious pseudonym. Suggestions?
