In a first for network TV, NBC said it would bring the web show Quarterlife to TV early next year. As you can imagine, the deal was expedited by the WGA strike. Co-creator Marshall Herskovitz told Reuters that the WGA has determined that independently-made web shows are not subject to the strike. And the eight-minute episodes were designed to combine into one-hour episodes, which is exactly what NBC is planning to do. But it’ll be interesting to see what happens when NBC burns through the existing episodes (it’s unclear how many are written, although 36 are planned.)

A number of IB sites have launched a new video player in beta. The player is flash based, and video is presented in a 16×9 window. The player does have exceptional searching abilities. Clicking search shrinks the video and it continues playing while search results are displayed below. The “related” tab also seems to do a great job of finding similar videos from the station’s online archives. That said, there are problems - biggest being video quality. This is a beta, so I’m going to hold judgment while they work out the bugs. This is the first time I’ve seen IB introduce a new product as a test while they work out the kinks. I’m sure their stations appreciate that. Feel free to make your own observations in our comments. (Disclosure: My office is at Internet Broadcasting, and Hearst-Argyle is a part owner of the company.)

On April 29th, ABCNews.com relaunched with a clean, compact new design. But as one Lost Remote reader commented, “Is it possible to constrain a layout any more?” (This is especially interesting if you compared ABCNews.com right now with the new MSNBC.com.) In a note on the site, ABCNews.com says its planning to update its redesign with “more space for news” and “more content for you to grab and go with,” as well as a greater emphasis on video. Thoughts?
Update: Here’s a screen grab. There’s a Flash tour of the home page included on this page.

I’m happy to announce that I’ve relaunched Lost Remote’s jobs section with a partnership with Jobthread. Not only are job postings still free, but they’ll also automatically appear on many job aggregators, like Google and SimplyHired. (As well as Lost Remote’s home page, and coming soon, an email newsletter.) Jobthread is a slick interface (also used by PaidContent), and my thanks to them for integrating the board seamlessly with LR. So if you’re looking to hire interactive media people, there’s no better place to find ‘em than Lost Remote.
