ABCNews.com to update its redesign

Cory Bergman November 16th, 2007

On April 29th, ABCNews.com relaunched with a clean, compact new design. But as one Lost Remote reader commented, “Is it possible to constrain a layout any more?” (This is especially interesting if you compared ABCNews.com right now with the new MSNBC.com.) In a note on the site, ABCNews.com says its planning to update its redesign with “more space for news” and “more content for you to grab and go with,” as well as a greater emphasis on video. Thoughts?

Update: Here’s a screen grab. There’s a Flash tour of the home page included on this page.

“More content for you to grab and go with” and “a greater emphasis on video” are in opposition to each other, aren’t they? Esp. if they mean streaming video. The quickest way to get information and to “grab” it — whatever that means — is to get it via text.

I know this is an unpopular idea these days, but I really prefer the main stories on a news site to be text-based, with the *option* for video. Unfortunately for me, CNN goes in the opposite direction, putting up all those video links when all I really want is a quick textual run-down.

Wow, doesn’t that new look have a strong similarity to cnn.com? Big picture, long headline list, watch video images above a square ad…

Ditto, adm. I can read a lot faster than I can watch. Give me some basis for deciding whether it’s worth spending the additional time on a video, or forget it.

Looks like the new look is live. It still seems a bit crunched/cluttered, but it’s a hell of a lot better than it was.

I like it… except for the black background on the header and main navigation. It’s too dark and colorless.
