Have some content with your ad

Don Day November 26th, 2007

I just clicked on a story at the Hollywood Reporter and was presented with quite possibly the largest normal-placement ad unit I’ve ever seen (outside of interstitials and other “special” ads). The ad measures 475X900. Amazingly, since the page is mostly clutter-free, the ad isn’t as obnoxious as it could be.

Update: I just read another story - and got an ad with white flashes in it - which makes it really hard to read the story because your eye is constantly being distracted. So maybe it is obnoxious.

And there’s room for a couple large rectangle ads under the story copy. Or better! Above it.

I saw the site today too. Like the page-grab you posted above, the ad I saw was for a movie too. It’s a great ad-size for Hollywood to promote itself — it looks like a movie poster outside a theater.

I got the flasher too. Distinctly obnoxious. Grossly obnoxious. Can’t they at least set it up so it doesn’t become active unless you have your cursor on it? That way you could read the article in peace, and watch the ad if you felt like it. Give me the choice, damn it!
