Truly open standards aren't controlled by one company, discreet. So it wouldn't be a half solution.

Michael: Of course it's easy to download for a PC.

If you're in a typical business setting, however, that's one more piece of software for an overworked IT person to install and maintain.

And, for many home PC users, installing yet another piece of software is extremely annoying and downright scary.

discreet_chaos: If there's one/or a bundle of codecs that are accepted, then users could use whatever end player they wanted to, right?

Don - If there's one standard, then there's only one software company making money and no one else would be able to break into the business or compete.

Perhaps, if they open their standard and let people build add-ons and the like, there'd be a few crumbs for others, but if there's a standard, then only one company makes most of the money and the technology will only progress at their pace.

I'm all for better technology - but I want a standard. I don't need four different web browsers to view a page - but these ridiculous tech companies think we should all have differnet ways to see video? Flash, WM, Silverlight, Real, etc. I need a different video player for ABC... and another one for KSL.com... and another one for.....

Standards. That's all I'm askin' for.

I have downloaded Silverligiht myself and it's quite easy. I had no problems. I also downloaded the ABC player with no problems. I'm not sure I understand the thinking that improved technology should come to us without us having to improve our systems with new software. You don't hear people complain about installing Flash, or one of those Web browser things. I'm sure there are some people still using telnet, but I choose to upgrade to the latest and greatest whenever I can.

I was just thinking earlier (after Cory's post about watching the keynote and needing Silverlight) how annoying this is. I also resolved to wait as long as humanly possible to download Silverlight. I guess I won't make it past 08/08/08 since I work at an NBC station and will need to see my own content. I wonder how affiliates will deal with education of users since no local site I know of is using Silverlight -- we'll have to tell people to download Silverlight, even if our site video is in Flash or Windows Media.

How many !!!!ing media players do the networks expect me to download? From ABC to CNN, everybody wants a piece of my hard drive. Seriously, they should all just huddle, figure out how they want to track my viewing habits, put it into a special player (CNN's just streams a Windows Media protocol, but Windows Media doesn't let them spy on me), and then all agree that this one piece of spyware is the only thing they expect me to download.
