WMUR.com’s YouTube-Facebook reporter

Cory Bergman January 7th, 2008

WMUR.com in Manchester, NH has hired a 22-year-old college student to cover the primary. Called “Your Fate ‘08,” his reports are appearing on WMUR.com as well as YouTube and Facebook. “The whole point of doing Your Fate ‘08 is getting our message out to as many people as possible,” says WMUR News Director Andrew Vrees. “We’re doing the things younger users say they want to see more of.” Also, WMUR worked with YouTube to distribute free flip video cameras to encouarge people to upload their primary-related video. The highest-ranked videos will make it on the air. Screen grab of WMUR’s YouTube page below…

    Oh, goody.

Another kid being given a major-market journalism job because he’s young and must understand young people.

    Experience? Hah! Don’t need it.

    i wish them success. really.

but the REAL news would have been arming a 70 year old little old lady with a digital camera and a laptop.

everyone knows older folks are steadfast voters. more and more of them are going online. yes, tv owners, the last part of your audience is enroute to leaving you.

today i had the opportunity to pass through a recently built (BEAUTIFUL) local library where over 1/2 of the internet stations had gray hair seated at them.

what do you suppose they were doing?

    YOU WANNA MAKE WAVES?

    quit with the safe stuff.

    couple other points-

    1. i see no mention of facebook there. not even a link. it’s one thing to ride their popularity…

    2. the “reporter” looks nothing like what most college students are going to pay attention to. he looks like a nice intern candidate. but i happen to have been on the university of chicago campus yesterday afternoon and i can tell you maybe 5 of the 1000 students i saw had a haircut like that (or even a haircut) much less a button-down shirt.

as said earlier… quit with the safe stuff.

Good point, WMUR isn’t that large. My point is still the same, however: using young, inexperienced “journalists” because you want to appeal to young people is stupid.

I think its a great thing that a young person is doing all this.

I mean think of it like this: at 22 you don’t know a shit about anything. And thats the point. Do you think a really smart and expereinced reporter will appeal to a younger audience whose jeans start at the knees? For them IRan simply means the past tense of an early morning jog. So great going guys. Why not give the guy some lipstick and earings, that way, you can also appeal to teh cross dressing public. What? Did i say something wrong? Wasn’t this supposed to be make-your-reporter-look-like-the-target-audience marketing strategy? Also, the next time, you can have a three year old commenting on the primaries, that way those infants too may decide to switch from cartoons and watch the real cartoons namely hillary, barack and mc pain or something like that

And yes, anther thing. He can strip at the end of hte reports, the girls may enjoy it and i dare say, some boys too (oops, dont ask dont yell!)

Hey and another thing> why not make him vote for bush? That way, the young voters will know that Bush is not something that grows in the backyard but just travels some three billion miles to bomb some irrelevant people and then call it a war on terror! Lame duck? No no, re-read the constitution, these days miracles happen, remmeber the year 2000?
