Oprah to give Discovery Health a makeover

Don Day January 15th, 2008

Discovery Communications and Oprah Winfrey’s Harpo Productions signed a deal to remake Discovery Health as the Oprah Winfrey Network. The pact will give Harpo 50% control of the network, and Discover Communications will grab 50% of oprah.com. Oprah gets editorial control, Discovery gets a cash machine. For now, Oprah’s signature product, The Oprah Winfrey Show, won’t air on the network. The current syndication deal - which runs through May 2011 - prohibits a cable network repeat. “This is an evolution of what I’ve been able to do every day,” Winfrey said. “I will now have the opportunity to do this 24 hours a day on a platform that goes on forever.”

Discovery Health, by the way, is in more than 70 million homes.

WHY WHY WHY??? We just LOVE Discovery Health channel. We moved in ‘04 and lost it in our new location. We just recently got it back, thru service upgrade not thru basic service, and here we’re threatened of losing it again?? Please, please, please don’t take our Discovery Health away.

This makes me incensed. This was the perfect channel for future healthcare professionals and now we have nothing to watch. Oprah is out of control.

I know I love all the shows that come on Discovery Health. I do not want Oprah to change it all. I will definitely not watch the network if Oprah changes things.

Oprah is going to ruin DHC. I love most of the shows and I’m sure she’ll 86 most of them. :(

This is just ridiculus….I watch DHC all the time and really love most of the programing. I don’t watch Oprah at all and sure won’t be watching if she takes ove DHC.

I’m excited! Discovery Health is mostly repeats about multiple kids, dwarfs, etc. I am so looking forward to a half hour of exercise leadership every couple of hours so we can have “company” while we exercise, and getting real information about health issues. I may keep Comcast if she redoes Discovery Health!
