YouNewsTV now on 50 station sites

Cory Bergman January 21st, 2008

Broadcast Interactive Media’s YouNewsTV service — an application that allows users to upload video and photos — has now grown to 50 local TV station sites in 38 markets. If you’re curious, Broadcasting & Cable reports the service costs $2,000 a month on average in licensing fees, including a share of revenue. Broadcast Interactive plans to launch a new feature in coming weeks that will allow stations in the network to share video with each other.

Wow. $2k a month? The examples of YNTV I’ve seen have almost no CGM clips in them. That’s $24,000 a year I could generally put to better use…

The thing that strikes me about it is that it is still the old “send us your content” mantra. Several of the sites I looked at in the past that have it use that canned phrase with the follow-up “and we may broadcast your (whatever) on the air”.

The YouNewsTV widget isn’t a community building block as much as its a platform for generating story leads for broadcast.

Maybe if it was organized in such a way that it gave people more incentive or more share of voice somehow it might be a better tool for community building but right now it’s just ‘Give us your content so we can put it on the TV’. Packaged as is I agree with Don that there are much better things I could think of doing with that $24K.
