FCC may require broadcasters to run DTV spots

Cory Bergman January 29th, 2008

The FCC may soon approve a plan that would require local TV stations to run at least four 30-second spots a day informing consumers of the upcoming switch to digital TV. As the deadline approaches (just over one year away), the requirement may jump to as high as 12 spots a day. Broadcasters, who are already running DTV spots on their own schedules, say they haven’t been bombarding the airwaves because set-top converter boxes are not yet generally available. (WSJ sub. req.)

How many of you TV guys able to do so have gone and done speaking engagements about DTV?

I’ve done a few and have found most people pretty receptive. Our number fo e-mails and calls into the station has slowly increased over the last couple of months as the spots have been running.

what sort of person would contact a tv station about their tv?

maybe the same one that would call the grocery store for advice on a new frost-free side-by-side?

    come on!

I’m a promotion manager at FOX 9 in Minneapolis, and we’re already running these spots, per Rupert.
It’s my understanding that we’re already required to do so, and that Rupert is going to try to take the FCC to court on it.

As long as they are clear to non-techies that they don’t need to upgrade to dish/cables uberHD package or they won’t be able to watch TV at all. Comcast was already preying on those fears last year.
