BREAKTHROUGH IN WRITERS STRIKE

Cory Bergman February 2nd, 2008

Striking writers and the major studios have reached a preliminary agreement on the key differences between the two groups, reports the LA Times. The last sticking point in the negotiations has been compensation for TV shows streamed over the internet, but it looks like both sides have come together on the issue (but no details have been released yet.). A final contract could be presented to the WGA as early as late next week.

Does this mean I’ll get 16 episodes of “Lost” this ear?

    Um…no.

Assuming that the deal is announced next week, and then its ratified quickly (and that asumes that the details are to everyone’s liking), most show would need at least a couple of weeks to get up to speed.

“Lost,” for instance, has enough new episodes to get into maybe April, so odds are that if there are any new ones produced this spring, it would only amount to maybe another 4-5. ABC might just decide to write off the rest of the season, and have more new ones for next year.

    Actually, um, maybe.

It depends on the show and what in the way of written scripts are in the can. You can just about bet that marginal and newer shows that need a hefty deal of promotion probably won’t be back (Pushing Daisies, Chuck, etc). However, don’t underestimate how much networks need their marquee shows like LOST, 24, Grey’s. If production can be ramped up and maybe if there are a couple of scripts in the can, a show like LOST might be able to pull it off since they need to produce only 8 more this season. 24 would be an issue with only 8 in the can and 16 left it may be too much to ramp up a show like that.
