Did Budweiser rip off… Dairy Queen?

Don Day February 4th, 2008

Did you see the Budweiser Super Bowl ad with the guy who can breathe fire? It instantly reminded me of another very similar series of ads for a spicy burger offered by Dairy Queen.

I don’t think Budweiser “ripped off” DQ anymore than most TV stations “rip off” promo ideas from stations in other markets.

They’re not competitors. Plus, slapstick comedy and the ability to “breathe fire” are not original DQ ideas in the first place.

The bigger issue at large is the state of Budweiser ads… We’re talking the company the brought you the Lizards, Frogs, and the millenium’s favorite catchphrase “Wassup”. :-)

I agree with Don… When I saw that Bud Light ad, I turned to my wife and said “Dairy Queen already did that.”

Dave, maybe Budweiser and DQ aren’t competitors, but I’m pretty sure that the ad agencies that did those spots are competing. If it’s the same agency, then they’re double-dipping, and ripping off Bud.

The best ad was the Gatorade dog slobbering water everywhere. That’s originality! (And my kitchen floor!)

Now if you could somehow combine this with the GoDaddy beaver spot…

I guess I expect advertisers to bring their A game to Super Bowl ads — not recycle an old idea.
